U-TURNING IN A CROSSWALK OR SCHOOL ZONE IS ILLEGAL

We ask adults dropping of children at NLS to not u-turn in the crosswalk. It is dangerous and illegal. It can carry a fine of approximately $155 as well as two demerit points on your driver’s license. Please follow the driving and parking bylaws and help keep our students and others walking to and from school safe.

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE UNATTENDED IN THE HUG & GO

Drivers should NOT be leaving their vehicle unattended in the Hug & Go for morning drop off between 8:50 and 9:10 or end of day pick up from 3:20 and 3:45 Monday to Thursday or 12:50 - 1:15 Friday.  This is not a parking lot at that time. If you pick your child up at their door, please find street parking or walk to the school.

When drivers leave their vehicle to walk onto the school grounds, they block everyone from getting in or out of the Hug & Go loop, which brings it to a complete stop and is an issue for all. Please be considerate of others and follow the expectations.

Many families make alternate pick up spot arrangements with their children so they do not need to use the loop, which often works out much better.

(Parents with students at Little Steps can continue in their normal drop off and pick up routines as this is not occurring during our regular entry and dismissal times.)

WILL YOU ATTEND OUR SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING ON JANUARY 31?

During our Wednesday, January 31 School Council Meeting, our Grade Three teachers will be sharing some of the learning they have been doing in their classrooms. We will also be reviewing and answering questions about this year’s School Development Plan (SDP). See page 9 – 12 on the SDP document on our website to review our focus and information. We will also be discussing School Budgets and Fees. A School Planning Survey will be sent to all families to help gather your voice. Please watch for an email with the survey on February 1.

REPORT CARDS

By the end of January, your child’s report card will be available to view online in your MyCBE account. The report card is one of the ways teachers communicate how your child is progressing in their learning. Teachers may also share learning progress through parent/teacher conferences, your child’s work and assignments, and other ongoing communication.

What to Expect in Your Child’s Report Card

CBE began implementing the new Alberta Education Curriculum as follows:

  • Fall 2022 start:
    • Mathematics for K-3 and for 4-5 at NLS (early implementation)
    • English Language Arts and Literature for K-3 and for 4-5 at NLS (early implementation)
    • Physical Education and Wellness for K-6
  • Fall 2023 start:
  • Mathematics for 4-6 in all schools
  • English Language Arts and Literature for 4-6 in all schools
  • Science for K-3

In the new curriculum, some things students learn may be new or may have previously been taught in higher grades. Students could be missing foundational pieces from previous grades, and their report card indicators might not be as high as before. This is expected when there is a new curriculum. It might take more than one school year to build these foundational skills. Even though each grade has its own curriculum, many ideas come up again each year, helping students to build on what they already know and do well.

Teachers continue to make learning interesting and inspiring and are adapting to students' needs during this transition. As always, if you have questions about your child's learning, please reach out to their teacher.

Kindergarten Report Cards

Kindergarten teachers will report progress to parents / legal guardians via January and June report cards.

  • In January, progress in English Language Arts and Literature and Math will be communicated to parents / legal guardians via the online report card. Other subject areas will be visible online but will be blank (these subjects will not appear on PDF versions).
  • In June, progress in all discipline areas will be communicated to parents / legal guardians via the report card.
