ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION WEEK

This year, our Environmental Education Week focus is to help students understand that caring for and connecting with the land is important because it builds a deep sense of environmental responsibility and stewardship. By caring for and connecting to the land, it can improve overall well-being of physical and mental health.

Students will be participating in a wide variety of activities throughout the week. Please check your child’s homeroom blog each day for updates.  You can find the blogs at https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/northernlights/teaching-learning/classes-departments/pages/default.aspx

SPIRIT DAY: DRESS LIKE YOU’RE OUT IN NATURE / DRESS LIKE YOU ARE NATURE DAY

On Tuesday, we will have a spirit day where students can dress like they would be out in nature. Ideas could include dressing like a hiker, camper, fisherman, nature conservationist, park ranger, wildlife biologist, etc.

Then can also dress like they ARE part of nature. Ideas could include bugs or insects, leaves, trees, birds, animals, flowers, etc.

The idea is just to have fun with it!  (If they do not want to dress up, that’s totally fine too.)

WALK & WHEEL TO SCHOOL (OR TO THE BUS STOP)

As part of our Environmental Week, families are encouraged to choose an alternate method to get to school or to their school bus stop other than driving in a vehicle.  Classes will be graphing how many students and staff in the class, grade, and school have included walking, biking, scootering or skateboarding, etc.

LITTERLESS LUNCHES AND SNACKS

Students and staff will be doing their best to eliminate single use plastics and packages for their snacks and lunches starting next week to create new patterns that will last across the school year.  This not only helps our environment, but is also a more budget friendly way to bring down the cost of grocery purchases. Our goal is to see how ‘litterless’ we can be when bringing food to school by using re-usable packaging options. Although this will be highlighted throughout our Environmental Education week, this will be an ongoing challenge throughout the year as we all strive to protect the earth!

DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER

Students should be warmly dressed for fall weather as we are outside numerous times per day, including before school as well as for Phys. Ed., outdoor learning activities, lunch recess and afternoon recess. We go out each day, even if it is cold, windy or raining. Students are welcome to bring an umbrella to school if they wish but we also suggest students have or wear clothing that can be layered and include:

-        a t-shirt

-        a hoodie or sweater

-        a fall jacket if it’s not raining

-        a rain coat if it is raining or might rain

-        rain boots if it is muddy or wet

DO YOU CALL THE ATTENDANCE LINE?

Every time that your child will be late or absent, you need to call the attendance line (403-817-3444 Ext. 1) so we know in advance.

You will slowly and clearly say their name and then spell their last name, say their teacher’s name, and say why they will be absent.

For example, you would call 403-817-3444 and press 1. After the message, you would say:

“Soni Jaffary, J – A – F – F – A – R – Y, Mrs. Sloane’s class, is sick today.”

                                                       or

“Kellie Squaltz, S – Q – U – A – L – T – Z, from Miss Pratt’s class, has a doctor’s appointment today.”

***Please call the attendance line BEFORE 8:45 am as this is when the secretary takes the messages off the machine.***

We appreciate your cooperation.
