POCKET SIZED OR HAND-HELD SNACKS

During the school day, students have an opportunity to eat a SMALL hand or pocket-sized snack. Please help your child choose a snack that fits in their hand or is in a container that can go back in their pocket when done eating. Snacks should be separate from lunch and should not require a table to eat as students often eat snack at recess or while doing a work job.

Because we dismiss at 1:05 pm each Friday, students do not have lunch break at school but will have opportunities to eat two small hand or pocket-sized snacks as the day is still quite long for them.  We ask that parents send one or two small snacks on Fridays even through no full lunch is required.  Please see the Canada Food Guide for different brain and body fueling ideas: https://food-guide.canada.ca/en/?wbdisable=true. Teachers are not permitted to provide snacks to students. Thank you for your understanding.

SAVE THE DATE FOR OUR ‘WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR’ OPEN HOUSE

On the evening of Thursday, September 21 from 5:00 - 7:30, families will have an opportunity to drop in for a few minutes at a time that is convenient for them during our ‘Welcome to the New Year’ Open House.

Although we will have a 2 ½ hour window of time available for families to come in, only 15- to 30-minutes is needed. (There will not be a booking system for this evening and you do not need to sign up for a specific time to come.)

This drop in evening will give you a chance to:

  • take a walk through the school to see our various learning spaces
  • see your child's classroom
  • say hello to your child's homeroom teacher
  • see a few things that your child will share about classroom routines, structures and activities

**Please note, this Open House evening is not intended as a time for teachers to sit down to discuss how each child is doing, as school will only been in school for a few weeks and teachers are still getting to know their students.**

If you have not done so already, please return the paper copy of the Parent or Guardian Questionnaire we sent home at the start of the year This document is a key piece in providing your child’s teacher with a lot of very important information about your child that they will need to build on a successful year.

NLS MAKERSPACE

Our NLS Makerspace is a collaborative area where students can create, tinker, invent and learn by making.  Our area will provide hands-on learning opportunities for students to explore materials and resources when working on personally meaningful projects.

Within our space, we have included items to help students learn basic coding (such as Code-a-pillars, Code & Go robot mice, Dash Robots and Osmos), items to build with (such as blocks, Squigz, K’Nex, IO Blocks, and magnetic tiles), and items to create with (such as buttons, straws, pop tabs, milk jug lids, gems, bread tags, etc.)

Use of this space will provide learning opportunities that are approachable / accessible to ALL students. Teachers are able to plan tasks with a low floor (a simple starting point that students can approach without worrying about the task complexity) up to a high ceiling (where there is room for a task to grow in complexity for students who are ready for more).

FIRST FIRE DRILL

Our first fire drill will be sometime in the next week or so.  Although teachers have spoken with students about safety procedures, this drill will be a fully announced drill as students new to our building have not heard the alarm before.  Students are reminded to go directly to the muster point they will continue to practice going to with their teachers and to not plug their ears when they hear the alarm.  Although it seems loud, the Calgary Fire Department has tested the decibels to ensure it is safe for our students’ ears.  We practice without plugging our ears so that important announcements could be heard in the case of an actual emergency evacuation.

MINOR INJURIES VS. MAJOR INJURIES

If you child has a minor scrap, paper cut or small bump, our staff may provide them a band-aid or an ice pack if it makes the student feel better. They will not contact parents or guardians over minor injuries.  If your child has a bump to the head or a more major injury, we will call parents or guardians to inform families about the incident  We will only call parents or guardians if we feel the injury warrants further attention or monitoring after the child leaves the school.
