NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION / ORANGE SHIRT DAY
On Thursday, September 28, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt (or an orange article of clothing if they don't have an orange shirt) to recognize Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for everyone to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community. Orange Shirt day began in 2013 when residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school. For more information about Orange Shirt Day please visit https://www.cbc.ca/kidscbc2/th...
September 30 is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. The intention of this day is to recognize and honor residential school survivors, their families and communities. It also ensures that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. In recognition of this day, September 29 is a non-operation day for the CBE. Our students will be engaging in learning prior to honor this important day and to show our school community’s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action. Please make sure you read our blog posts to learn more about the activities and learning students are doing in their classrooms and within Northern Lights School.
ANNUAL VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION FORMS SENT HOME
On Monday, September 25, teachers are sending home Annual Volunteer Registration forms to all of our currently cleared volunteers. If you receive one, we would love it if you could fill it out and return it as soon as possible. This will ensure you are all ready to go for any volunteer opportunities arise this year that you would like to help with.
If you were a cleared volunteer at a different school last year, please email Mrs. Brinson and we will get your information pulled over to Northern Lights.
OUR HEARTS ARE FULL
Thank you to all families that came out for our Welcome to the New Year Open House. It was incredible to see so many smiling face and to hear such kind words about the school, the teachers, the staff, and the year so far. We were so touched that so many people took the time to pass on such amazing positivity and to express their gratitude. Our hearts felt full and it was so very appreciated!!!
COMMUNITY WALKS
Just a reminder that classes regularly go outside for community walks and land-based learning opportunities. Teachers post about the community walk at least 48-hours in advance on their classroom agenda blogs so please ensure you are reading the agenda blog on a daily basis to be up to date. We remind students to dress for the weather that is in the forecast and for what they see after looking outside in the morning so they are comfortable during their outside opportunities. Please see the walking trip letter on the right side of this news story for other information.
