Overflow School Designation for Kindergarten to Grade 5 Regular Program Students Residing in Carrington

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

We would like to inform you that due to continued enrolment growth at Northern Lights School, the school will be unable to accommodate all the students who live within the designated school boundary for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year and beyond. For this reason, enrolment will be capped, and an overflow school will be established for students residing in the community of Carrington.

Effective immediately, all new kindergarten to Grade 5 Carrington registrations for Northern Lights School, including new registrations in SchoolEngage, will be overflowed to North Haven School.

  • North Haven School is in the community of North Haven at 4922 North Haven Dr NW Calgary, AB T2K 2K2, phone 403-777-6220

All kindergarten to Grade 5 students who live in the Carrington community and attend the overflow school, North Haven School, will be placed on a call-back list and offered a place at Northern Lights School if space becomes available.

No changes for current Carrington students attending Northern Lights School

Carrington students who are currently attending Northern Lights School and students whose registration has already been accepted by Northern Lights School for the 2023-24 school year may remain at the school, provided they do not move out of the Carrington or designated community.

Overflow designation for Carrington community regular program students for the 2023-24 school year and beyond.

All new registrations from kindergarten to Grade 5 regular program students living in the Carrington community will be directed to North Haven School. This includes all kindergarten to Grade 5 students who have submitted registration for Northern Lights School through SchoolEngage for the 2023-24 school year and have yet to receive confirmation of acceptance and all new registrations received today and beyond.

Why is this change happening?

There have been continuous registrations for Northern Lights School. For this reason, changes must be put in place to ensure the school remains at its capacity and for the safety of students and staff.

What is a call-back list?

If space becomes available in Northern Lights School during the school year, that space will be offered to students on the call-back list who are currently attending the designated overflow school, North Haven School. Families will be notified by their school if space becomes available.

Students remain on the call-back list while they attend the designated overflow school. Students will be removed from the call-back list if they move out of the Northern Lights school boundary or transfer from their designated overflow school. Any new registrations received for the 2023-24 school year will be added to the call-back list based on priority designation and the date and time of their registration.

The lottery process will be followed for kindergarten to Grade 5 for the 2024-25 school year and beyond. For more details on how we determine priority, please visit our website.

We will make every effort to keep siblings together at a single school. Families with a kindergarten or Grade 1 student who is unsuccessful in the lottery and a sibling who is already attending Northern Lights School may choose to register all children at the overflow North Haven School.

How do I register for the 2023-24 school year?

Any new registrations from students living in the Carrington community must still register for Northern Lights School through SchoolEngage. Once these registrations have been received, the school will determine if there is space and resources available at Northern Lights School. If the student cannot be accommodated, student information is transferred to their new overflow designation, North Haven School. The student will be added to the call-back list for Northern Lights School based on priority. For more information on how to register, please visit our website.

How will students get to school?

Students are eligible for transportation to their designated school or overflow school if they live beyond the walk zone. Overflowed students will receive transportation to and from North Haven School once families submit a transportation registration and it is processed.

In the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and across the city, we are experiencing a school bus driver shortage that may impact the mode of service provided. Please be assured that we are doing everything possible and working with our partners to restore reliability to transportation services.  Visit Busing & Transportation for more information, or to register for transportation, visit MyCBE. Alternatively, families may use a paper form that is available on our website.
